Comparing the 2019 Volkswagen Tiguan vs. 2019 Honda CR-V

Volkswagen, “The People’s Car”, looked to the people in 2009 to create the name of their compact SUV. When the smoke cleared, the Tiguan was born. Developed from the German words for Tiger and Iguana, the Tiguan (pronounced TEE-gwan), was born from the people for the people.

The Tiger is known for its willpower, courage and personal strength. In Tantric Buddhism, the Tiger represents a protector from outside harm. While the iguana is considered a symbol of patience, understanding and kindness. Like these two spirit animals, the Tiguan is the perfect balance of strength and patience, while serving as a protector to the most important part of Volkswagen…you!

Is The 2019 Volkswagen Tiguan A Good SUV?

The 2019 Volkswagen Tiguan is an excellent compact SUV. It offers more cargo and passenger space than almost every other compact SUV. It provides a gentle ride and an extensive list of standard and available features. Unlike its competitor, the 2019 Honda CR-V, the Tiguan offers third row seating.

Under The Hood & Performance

In a word…impressive. The Tiguan offers a 2.0-liter turbo-four that generates 184 horsepower and 221 pound-feet of torque that is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission.

The turbocharged engine is perfect for cruising around Harrisburg, while delivering enough power to pass other vehicles going across the South Bridge. The acceleration is strong like the Tiger, while the transmission shows no hesitation in shifting.

This VW has earned an EPA-estimated 22 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway. This outstanding fuel efficiency puts the Tiguan near the top of the compact SUV category.

You will find the Tiguan delivers both a comfortable and sporty ride. Bumpy Pennsylvania roads do little to disrupt the ride comfort. If you seek agility to navigate some of the winding roads of Central, PA…look no further than this Volkswagen. The Tiguan has 7.9 inches of ground clearance and standard front-wheel drive you will be thankful for during those icy Pennsylvania days.

What’s On The Inside?

For a compact SUV, the Tiguan still seats seven, thanks to its third row seating. The Tiguan offers plenty of space through the cabin for even taller adults for both the first and second rows. For those with small children, the Tiguan has two full sets of LATCH car-seat connectors on the rear outboard seats and an additional tether anchor for the rear middle seat.

Cloth upholstery comes standard. The extra nice interior is enhanced with high quality materials, making this compact SUV more upscale than most in its class. The three row Tiguan has 12 cubic feet of space behind the rear seats, 33 cubic feet behind the second row and 65.7 cubic feet with the rear seats folded down.

Standard luxury inside the Tiguan includes; smartphone integration via Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a 6.5-inch touch screen, a USB port, and a six-speaker sound system. Like other Volkswagen, the infotainment system is user-friendly and the Volkswagen Digital Cockpit provides a 12.3-inch screen instead of a traditional gauge cluster. And with the standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, the Tiguan is trumping the competition.

Is The Tiguan Safe?

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gave the 2019 Tiguan four out of five stars in rollover crash tests and five stars in side crash tests. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave this vehicle the highest rating of “Good” in every crash test conducted.

The Safety Features of the Tiguan are nothing short of excellence. A rearview camera comes standard. Other available safety features include blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, automatic high beams, adaptive headlights and surround-view camera.

The Verdict Is In

Should you buy a Tiguan? If you are in the market for a compact SUV that offers a generous amount of user-friendly technology, a serene, comfortable ride and lots of cargo space…the Tiguan is right for you. Third-row seating really separates the Tiguan from its competition, something the 2019 Honda CR-V does not offer. And let’s not forget the Volkswagen 6 year/72,000 mile “bumper-to-bumper” factory warranty.

“It’s the eye of the tiger, it’s the thrill of the fight.” The Tiguan is “hang’n tough, stayin’ hungry”. And like Rocky Balboa, the “People’s Champion”, the “People’s Car” is knocking out the Honda CR-V…”Risin’ up to the challenge of our rival.”
